Property Damage Accident/Stolen Vehicle Arrest

On October 14, 2020 at approximately 9:06 PM Tompkins County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to the 1300 Block of Elm Street Extension in the Town of Groton for a reported motor vehicle accident were a car crashed into a telephone pole and the pole caught on fire.

Arriving on scene Deputies located a pickup truck crashed into a telephone and the telephone pole on fire. The operator had fled the scene of the accident. During the accident investigation, Deputies discovered the truck was stolen from the City of Syracuse.

While completing their accident report on scene, Deputies were notified by nearby residents that someone was hiding in their barn. Deputies responded and a male fled from them on foot into a creek bed.

Additional units were dispatched to the scene and a perimeter was established. A K-9 team arrived on scene a short time later and began to search the area. Moments later the K-9 unit located the male hiding in the muddy creek bed.

The male, identified as Corrie C. Ryan, age 38 of Cortland, was taken into custody without incident.

Ryan was charged with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Third Degree (Class D Felony), Obstructing Governmental Administration in the Second Degree (Class A Misdemeanor), Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Seventh Degree (Class A Misdemeanor), Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle in the Third Degree (Class A Misdemeanor), Aggravated Unlicensed Operation in the Third Degree (Unclassified Misdemeanor), Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Accident (Traffic Violation), Failure to Keep Right (Traffic Violation), Speed not Reasonable or Prudent (Traffic Violation).

Ryan was virtually arraigned in Town of Ithaca Court and remanded to the custody of the Tompkins County Jail without bail.
